Wrong Conversations Rule Workplace Communication - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Wrong Conversations Rule Workplace Communication - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Back in December I composed here about another concept,The 4 Workplace Conversations. It came out of an ongoing customer contextual analysis. At the time I was encouraging an instructional meeting to enable the senior authority to group of a customer stand up to issues legitimately such that decreased work environment strife. This work environment correspondence model is commending its one-year commemoration this month. It's application, I'm learning, has much more profound application than I initially figured it out. You might need to return to the first article with this realistic portrayal of The 4 Workplace Conversations model to get a general comprehension. This article will concentrate on the discussion causing the greatest test in working environments today. You will think that its spoke to in the lower right quadrant of the model, recognized as The Wrong Conversation with the Right Person. I've discovered two essential ways The Wrong Conversation with the Right Person happens in the working environment. One is the commandeered discussion and the other is the obvious issue at hand discussion. Theoretically, you might be more acquainted with the last than the previous, despite the fact that I'm sure you have encountered both in your working environment correspondence. Commandeered Conversations These circumstances happen in two settings. One is the place an individual is talking with a predominant with a solid character, correspondence style, and plan. Frequently, the subordinate feels threatened, so in spite of having a solid need and want to examine a specific point, they permit the better than control the discussion. At the point when this happens the subordinate leaves without having had the option to neither make their point(s), nor get their work environment needs met, and they become disappointed and confounded about their incentive to the association. The other setting is on the opposite side of working environment execution. This is the place somebody is talking with a subordinate or a friend about their individual execution, conduct or activities needing remedy. It might be the useful input kind of discussion. Whichever it is, the thing that happens here is that the other individual in discussion goes on a meandering aimlessly digression of fault, reasons and interruption. Some are so acceptable at this off-base discussion it makes vulnerability about what truly happened, making so much disarray you choose to leave without goal. Both of these off-base discussions are botched chances in light of the fact that the work up to the discussion takes a great deal of time and vitality. In some cases getting the discussion on the schedule of the opportune individual is quite a while creating. When that arrangement is finished, the two sides expect the discussion that should happen, has, and returning to it gets troublesome. I call these validity and certainty murdering discussions in light of the fact that the individual who doesn't get the opportunity to come to their meaningful conclusion is in danger of losing believability with the perfect individual, while additionally accommodating as far as they could tell what occurred. Frequently, these discussions cause a scrutinizing of certainty and harm confidence. The Elephant in the Room The other wrong discussion with the perfect individual is the point at which the ideal individuals are in the room, mindful of circumstances that need tending to however because of the affectability of the theme and dread of responses, the subject is overlooked or kept away from. These, similar to the commandeered discussions, are botched chances. The more I mentor, counsel and train authoritative pioneers and their representatives on work environment correspondence, the more common I am finding these off-base discussions. These off-base discussions with the perfect individual are extremely hard to recognize and regularly, individuals don't understand an inappropriate discussion is occurring until its past the point of no return.

Manage Stress at Work by Retraining your Brain

Oversee Stress at Work by Retraining your Brain Oversee Stress at Work by Retraining your Brain Oversee Stress at Work by Retraining your Brain Schoen, Ph.D., creator of Your Survival Instinct is Killing You: Retrain your Brain to Conquer Fear and Build Resilience (Hudson Street Press, 2013.) The capacity to perform well under tension including how we oversee worry at work is perhaps the best aptitude we can create. Those people who exceed expectations under these conditions regularly report having a basic business advantage. As significant as overseeing working environment stress can be, hardly any officials or pioneers get preparing in this basic capacity. Rather, most find out about performing under tension from their own youth encounters. These may incorporate oral reports, sports, tests or state sanctioned tests that are frequently given under time imperatives. However for a huge portion of the populace, these early encounters have not adequately set them up to flourish under tension. Rather, they frequently set us up to unwind under tension. A little level of people really appear on the scene pre-wired to perform under tension. Truth be told, for a portion of these people, they really accomplish their best work under these extraordinary conditions. Sadly, most of us are not well arranged to oversee pressure, leaving us to endure various disillusionments or disappointments identified with high-pressure conditions. Fortunately it is conceivable to prepare ourselves to prosper in these conditions including unavoidable business related pressure. The Brain Must Be Retrained To effectively oversee worry at work and stress by and large requires preparing two altogether different locales of our mind to be cooperative people, rather than being at chances with one another. The higher-request preparing area of the mind is known as the cerebral cortex. This is the locale that is liable for critical thinking, for example, inductive, deductive, unique, and consistent reasoning. In the interim, a more seasoned district of the cerebrum, called the limbic framework, is liable for evaluating threat on the planet, at the end of the day, protecting us. At the point when the limbic mind detects threat, it actuates our endurance nature or the dread reaction in the cerebrum and body, closing off capacity to the higher-request preparing locale of the mind. Without adequate fuel in this piece of the cerebrum there is little squeeze left to run the critical thinking hardware. The limbic frameworks dread reaction frequently misjudges pressure as a danger. The limbic mind is especially delicate to this if past encounters of being feeling the squeeze have brought about helpless results, for example, disappointment, shame, judgment, or dismissal. The Stress Management Solution How might we figure out how to effectively oversee pressure? The arrangement lies in retraining the limbic framework to encounter weight and inconvenience in either a positive or a nonpartisan way, instead of a danger. Expressed in an unexpected way, we are keen on preparing ourselves to be versatile in awkward conditions. In a course I instruct at UCLA we do this by molding understudies to invite pressure-related uneasiness, instead of to fear and maintain a strategic distance from it. Here are a few methodologies from this course can have a noteworthy effect in effectively performing under tension and in unpleasant conditions. Acknowledge that pressure-related inconvenience is ordinary. The objective isn't to exile pressure related tension. On the off chance that we look to eradicate it, we just increment our dread of weight. Rather, work on being all the more tolerating of weight related uneasiness. Welcome and grasp pressure-related distress. Figure out how to adore pressure. Utilize the intensity of relabeling, which shows the cerebrum to decipher pressure in another manner. You can even reveal to yourself that you cannot stand by to feel pressure and that you love the delightful way it causes you to feel. Practice in constrained conditions. Over and over again we practice our abilities in non-forced circumstances. It is far superior to give a portion of your training time while under tension. At first, the objective isnt to hit the nail on the head, yet rather to get adjusted and progressively alright with pressure-related distress. Practice under blemished conditions. The world only occasionally lines up consummately. It is far superior to rehearse in blemished conditions where there are interruptions, irritations, and interferences. With training, these defects are killed, and much of the time, become facilitative of execution. Utilize Your Sleep to Rewire Your Brain. It is conceivable to oversee worry by utilizing rest as an apparatus to rework your reaction to weight and dread. Develop your uneasiness muscle. Since the limbic frameworks dread reaction is identified with seeing uneasiness as a danger, it is essential to fortify its response to distress. Figure out how to feel more quiet in other awkward conditions, for example, weariness, hunger, or awkward temperatures. Building your inconvenience muscle in different settings fortifies your resistance of distress and your versatility under tension conditions. Vanquish Fear and Build Resilience Plainly there is a lot of we can do to improve our administration of stress and stress conditions. On the off chance that we work under a dated thought that inconvenience is something to maintain a strategic distance from, at that point weight will keep on feeling overwhelming. Be that as it may, on the off chance that we figure out how to welcome and retrain our minds response to weight, inconvenience, and flawed conditions, at that point we can essentially adjust our dread reaction to pressure. I urge you to explore different avenues regarding the above procedures. In my long stretches of working with patients, I have discovered that they can have a significant effect in contracting the oversensitivity of the endurance sense and the minds reaction to fear. In case you're similar to the vast majority, you love bringing in cash regardless of whether you conceal your insatiable wants from loved ones. The universe of speculation banking reveals insight into your covetousness organs, however that is OK. Here's the way individuals get into this bustling budgetary world. The Psychology Of Being An Investment Banker A few people do it since they figure others will believe they're cool. Certainly, it's second-gave, yet there is a mental viewpoint to it that many can't cannot. The inclination you're large and in charge. This is not quite the same as having enthusiasm for the business (more on that later). It's progressively similar to love of cash and a powerful urge for individual riches the sort of riches that must be made around here. The Money Let's be honest: you can rake in boatloads of cash in the speculation banking business. There are some folks who will get up at 6Am each weekday, and 5 on Saturday since they believe it's Friday, just to bring in cash. The Lifestyle In the event that it's not the cash, it must be the way of life. Everything from fine Asian cafés serving new fish and costly French wine you've never known about (and can't articulate) to lodgings concealed on a remote peak on some Caribbean island, you love the way of life of being a venture investor. Pools that play with the sea's edge or that dangle unstably over a stone bluff are typical for you. Be that as it may, it's not about the get-aways and travel goals. Your fat pay and rewards imply that your lone genuine money related issues are making sense of where to stuff the entirety of this money for your future retirement. The Status The superficial point of interest factor is difficult to disregard. At the point when you're the model of monetary achievement, others admire you. Numerous brokers love realizing that their companions allude to them as rich and breathtaking or a money related prodigy. Companions and family members will call you, asking you how to get a decent arrangement on a home loan, what to put resources into for their retirement, how to purchase gold, what new tech startup they ought to be taking a gander at, and even what they ought to tip in cafés. You are viewed as probably the most intelligent individuals they know. They love it, thus do you. What's more, it's all part of the activity. The Passion This is likely one of the most downplayed purposes behind getting into account: the unadulterated delight, all things considered, Will individuals truly adore cash so much that they are enthusiastic about making it for it? Indeed. For some speculation investors, they couldn't mind less the amount they make. It's not really the individual riches they're after. They simply need to bring in cash. Each success, each finished arrangement, each marked agreement, is another confirmation of their viability in the business. It's an extraordinary inclination to help other people bring in cash, bring in cash yourself, and make your firm cash. Also, for certain individuals, stop. In the event that you live, breath, eat, and rest numbers, at that point you will make some extraordinary memories in fund. On the off chance that you see the exchanging floor as a grown-up play area, you will make some extraordinary memories in fund. Furthermore, if the sound of consoles clicking, and the smell of cash, puts a grin all over, well you know the rest. Energy isn't something a great many people learn. It's something that is felt. It's instinctive. It's a mental marvel that isn't handily clarified. The inclination you have a place in a specific calling like you were conceived for it. A few people have the enthusiasm. Many don't. On the off chance that you do, at that point you'll do it just to be in the business. The cash is good to beat all. FlexCareers welcomes powerhouse duo from LinkedIn

FlexCareers welcomes powerhouse duo from LinkedIn (L-R: Elle Green; Georgiana Williams) In June, a marketing and sales duo from LinkedIn joined our team, and we couldnt be happier to have them here. We wanted to introduce them to our community and let you get to know them better, as both Elle and Georgie have worked together previously and will be doing amazing things with and for our employer partners. Who are they? Elle Green, Head of Brand and Marketing at FlexCareers â€" Elle worked at LinkedIn in partnership with some of the world’s most well-known brands.  Shell be working hard to make our employer partners have a truly compelling brand marketing proposition around flex, as well as helping the #flexfamily build our trusted reputation. Georgiana Williams, Senior Client Manager at FlexCareers â€" Georgiana partnered with Elle at LinkedIn as global client executive, and will be one of the first points of contact for employer partners at FlexCareers. Who joined FlexCareers first? Elle: Me. Georgiana: Elle Elle: It took me a year to actually join FlexCareers. It was a massive leap of faith and although my heart said it was right, I wasn’t quite ready for the leap. Georgie and I talked a lot about the opportunity, and she kept saying it was perfect for me, so when I finally joined, she was my very first referral! What has been the highlight of your career journey to date? Elle:  From an organisation perspective, I would actually have to say LinkedIn. Professionally, working with truly global organisations on their talent strategies gave me incredible insight and knowledge to what successful business models should (or shouldn’t, sometimes) look like. Additionally, I got know the great talent behind the helm and having that peek into the downstream activities, challenges and regional nuances was incredibly valuable. On a personal note, dancing in Pacha in Macau at 2am like I was 18 again, on my birthday last year with a bunch of my favourite LinkedIn peeps was pretty epic to say the least! From a project perspective, the work I did for the Department of Human Services to recruit Child Protection Practitioners was singular the most rewarding time of my career.   It reminded me that we all have a responsibility to help others to the best of our abilities. I take my hat off to all social workers out there. Being a mother. Georgiana: In my global role at LinkedIn I partnered with clients helping them identify through data and analytics the skill sets they required for the future. It was a very rewarding experience, particularly my introduction into how useful analytics could be in shaping an organisations workforce. Working at LinkedIn and having access to that sort of data in terms of how the global workforce is shifting re: skills was eye opening. Best career tip you’ve ever been given? Elle: Bring your authentic self to work. Georgiana: Don’t presume, always ask. Why did you join FlexCareers? Elle: Three simple reasons: After I had my son, I struggled as many parents do to live life to the fullest. Between a demanding job, my travel, a husband that travelled, being a wife, a mother and a female leader I forgot about one very important thing: Me. I want to create a future where women don’t have to get to that point because they have some kind of balance in their lives, whenever they need it. I would say 80% of my conversations with organisations were about the workforce of the future and how to attract them. Flexibility and inclusion were a hot topics and people were finding it hard to implement it well. I wanted to be a part of creating a world where flexibility is accessible to anyone and to prove that it drives positive business outcomes. I had got to a point of my career where I wanted to feel fulfilled in my day to day work. I may not be a brain surgeon, but I can have a positive impact on people’s lives through the way they work. Georgiana:  Whilst meeting with global HR leaders I noticed a common thread or pain point amongst them how competitive it had become for sought after skills in the corporate workforce. Most companies had been set global targets and were looking for innovative strategies to improve the skills shortage. The majority of those solutions incorporated improving diversity. At FlexCareers its all we focus on, helping companies improve diversity not only demographically but diversity of skills also and it’s all done through enabling flexibility. As a mum of twin 3-year-old boys and an 8-year-old girl, working with companies and changing the way careers work is very close to my heart. What do you love most about your role? Elle: The awesome team here of course! Working for a business with purpose is incredible for having a team of passionate people at the helm. It inspires me to be the best professional I can be, to achieve a common goal. (Really, I promise!) Georgiana: I get energy from meeting people, so I love visiting my clients and hearing about the innovative programmes they are working on. There is always something new and something to learn. If you could be anything, what would you be? Elle: A professional dancer. Never going to happen (unless on said dancefloor at 2am). Georgiana: I loved science as a kid, my favourite movie was Space Camp, so I would have to say an Astronaut. Rapid fire: Favourite time of day? Elle: Morning. 8am with a coffee in hand on a sunny day. 10pm at night in bed with the electric blanket on if it’s cold. Georgiana: Evenings once all three kids are in bed (is that bad?) Favourite way to relax at the end of the week? Elle: Dinner and wine with my favourite people. Georgiana: Bath Favourite lunch spot? Elle: Bar Pho. Incidentally started by an amazing friend of mine and female entrepreneur. Georgiana: Bar Pho. Elle and I go on a lunch date there once a week! You can find Elle and Georgie on LinkedIn.

5 Critical Areas of Weakness With Your Resume -

5 Critical Areas of Weakness With Your Resume - Each week, I critique a new resume on-air over at www.jobtalkamerica.com.  And over the past couple of months I’ve started to notice some of what I like to call “terrible resume trends”.  They’re common mistakes that everyday job seekers are makingâ€"and they have no idea that they’re making them!  (How can you fix what’s wrong if you don’t even know what that is!)  Well, I’m here to open your eyes and (hopefully) start getting you some interviews.  Below is a list of weaknesses (the five most common) that people tend to overlook on their resumes. THE FONT You may not think the font you choose for your resume is very important, but it communicates more than you think.  Use a font that’s too small, and the documents will be too hard to readâ€"and the hiring manager won’t even invest any time in it.  Use one that’s too large and you’ll seem inexperienced and juvenile.  Use Times New Roman and you’ll send a subliminal message that you’re boringâ€"a mediocre lemmingâ€"that you’re just like everyone else.  Just as the outfit you wear to the interview provides a first impression for the hiring manager, so do the font and design on your resume. SUBPAR SUBTITLES Using the terms “SUMMARY”, “PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE”, and “WORK HISTORY” are becoming sorely overused.  Not to mention they waste space and don’t tell the hiring manager ANYTHING about what you’ve really accomplished.  Instead, use very specific subtitles.  At the top of your resume, instead of using the term “CAREER SUMMARY”, use your target job title.  That way, every time you apply for a job, it’s customized to that particular position.  Do the same with “PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE”.  If you are in IT and work as a project manager, change the title to “PROJECT MANAGEMENT EXPERIENCE”.  One more thing: If you’re an executive, do not use the header “PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE” on your resume. This is a HUGE mistake.  You’re sending a mixed message; in one portion of the resume you’re stating you’re an executive, but in another you are stating you’re professional.  Be consistent throughout the resume. POWERFUL PERSONAL BRANDING If the world realized how powerful a personally branded resume was, everybody would use one.  But the majority of the population is clueless.  So here’s your insider tip: GET A CLUE! Underneath that shiny new job target/title that you’ll be putting at the top of your resume, include a brief one-liner about why you’re the best (insert job title here) there is (or ever was)!  Use the opportunity to briefly highlight why you’re the perfect fit for their opening. GENERIC COVER LETTERS What a waste of space and time!  Do you want to bore the hiring manager?   Or engage him and give him a reason to read your resume?  Your cover letter should NOT be a reproduction of your resume.  Spend some time researching the company to which you’re applying, find out what their needs areâ€"then specify in the cover letter how you can help them meet their needs.  It will certainly set you apart from all the other candidates.  While you’re at it, don’t start your cover letter with the predictable “Please accept this ” “In response to ”  You’re not a mainstream candidate; you don’t run WITH the crowdâ€"you STAND OUT!  So show the hiring manager! REFUSING TO THANK How many people miss the boat on this one!  Take the time to thank the hiring manager for his time and to reiterate why you are excited about (and the best fit for) the opening.  I can tell you right now, most people don’t send a thank you letter.  In fact, in more than 10 years of working as an HR manager and recruiter, I can count on one hand the number of thank you cards or letters I’ve received.  Make your mark; be memorable, be polite, seal the dealâ€"write and send the thank you letter. Take a more strategic approach to your job search and start thinking about what sets you apartâ€"instead of just doing what you’ve always doneâ€"or what everyone else is doing.

Would You Rather Work for a Man or Woman

Would You Rather Work for a Man or Woman By, Dave Thomas Have you at any point halted to consider whether you incline toward working for a man or a lady? Having been in the news-casting field for about 22 years, I've worked under the two sexes and can sincerely say I've seen a few patterns advance. At any rate from my encounters, men get approval in these occasions: • They tend to not hold feelings of spite and overlook contradictions snappier; • They are increasingly agreeable for the most part talking about issues outside the workplace among other men; • They are progressively able to express their real thoughts. On the opposite side of the table, ladies get approval in these cases: • They thoroughly consider things for the most part more and the implications of choices; • They will get the job done bat for you since you're not part of the gang in the storage space where you are in consistent rivalry with one another; • They are progressively sorted out and in this way have a superior run framework, if it isn't miniaturized scale oversaw. Presently obviously there are men who will traverse and miniaturized scale deal with the hell out of you, and some female supervisors won't get the job done bat for you since you're not part of their friend network in the workplace, as a rule other ladies. In two or more decades in the working scene, I've actually not taken a gander at whether the supervisor was a man or lady. The reality to me is do they approach you with deference and allow you to prevail in your given position? Time after time today, workplace issues become interwoven in the working environment, prompting miserable managers and representatives. While huge numbers of us go through 40 hours or more at our separate positions every week, it is what you think about the activity that will in many cases decide if you will be effective there. I've been asked by a few managers throughout the years on the off chance that I was upbeat in my position and I generally react a similar way. Truly, my joy isn't the most significant thing. Am I a gainful laborer and do I coexist with my colleagues, including the chief? I've generally said that I can discover joy outside of any activity I'm in; wouldn't mean I like to be hopeless 40 hours per week, however my bliss in the 9 to 5 world isn't something that will represent the moment of truth me. A vocation and a manager are what you think about them. For me, it doesn't generally make a difference if the individual I report to wears a suit or a dress. How they treat me, the open doors I'm given to exceed expectations, and will they be consistent with their words are what matter most in my book. So on the off chance that you anticipated that me should state one sex is smarter to work for than the other, it isn't occurring. What is your experience? Do you have an inclination of working with one sex over the other?

5 Ways to Counter the Counter Offer

5 Ways to Counter the Counter Offer Counter offers are part of the package of recruitment. However, how can you counter the counter offer? Here  are my 5 steps to doing that: 1) Uncover your candidates motivators: Every candidate will have their own specific reasons for looking to change jobs (lack of career progression/ challenge/ support from management/ compensation etc) and your first priority should be to discover AND qualify exactly why they are looking to leave their current employer. Remember, dont take their reasons for face value! Qualify their reasons by discussing them in more detail and asking probing questions to dig deeper into why they really feel that way. Keep notes and document this important information as you can use it in the future to remind the candidate of their original motivations. This is an important step as not only does it give you more control in a counter offer situation, it also gives your more insight into the candidate and what really makes them tick. What if the candidate is primarily motivated by money? Thats ok! At least you now know so youll be extra alert to the heightened risk of a counter offer situation. Ive successfully placed dozens candidates whose main motivator is money sometimes it can make it make the candidate easier to close as the motivation is black and white. Again, dig deeper and find out the specifics about their compensation requirements and the shortfall at their current employer. This information can be used to your advantage during the offer process. 2) Discover their risk factor: Once you feel confident youve nailed down the candidates main motivations, then ask this question: Have you raised this issue with your boss/manager/HR yet? This can give you valuable insight to the level of risk of a counter offer occurring. If the candidate replies: Yes but he/she cant do anything about it! then youre pretty safe. If the answer is No I havent then they could be high risk! I usually probe further here and sometimes, depending on their motivations, I suggest they speak with their boss/manager/HR before moving forward on their job search (it could save you a whole lot of time and effort in the long run!). 3) Reveal and talk about the elephant: For the majority of candidates, the possibility of a counter offer wont have even crossed their minds. This is your chance to reveal the elephant hiding in the room to discuss and educate (and scare!) the candidate about the reality of counter offers. An unprepared candidate may accept a counter offer because they panic and they havent thought it through. Resigning can be an emotional experience and rash decisions can be made. A quick Google search will bring up dozens of articles detailing why accepting a counter offer is a bad idea but the main 2 I use during this conversation are: Your loyalty will always be in question: If you accept a counter offer, then youve already broken your trust with your current employer and youll likely be seen as a flight risk resulting in a good chance theyll be looking to replace you anyway. The figures speak for themselves: Multiple studies show that 80% of people who accept a counter offer have left again within 6 months as money is only a short term fix to the core problems. You could also suggest that the candidate does their own research online as they?ll quickly learn themselves that accepting a counter offer is rarely ever a good idea. When should I have this conversation with the candidate? There are 2 key occasions that I recommend you have this conversation: The first during the initial meeting/interview with the candidate, and then again before you formally make them an offer to keep the negative reality of a counter offer fresh in their mind. 4) Dont leave it to chance: Just because youve already prepared the candidate to reject the counter offer, it doesnt mean youre out of the woods yet. Another critical step is to make sure you keep in close contact with the candidate throughout the resignation process. Ask the candidate when they will be formally handing in their resignation and agree to schedule a phone call with them shortly afterwards to check in and see how it went. This way, if a counter offer was made to the candidate during their resignation process, youve probably caught it early enough to use the information you gained in step 1 to remind the candidate of their original motivations to leave before a rash or emotional decision is made. 5) Dont give up: Even if you perform all of the previously mentioned steps, theres no guarantee that the candidate wont accept a counter offer and you could be back at square 1. If you find yourself in this situation, then the best thing to do is to keep in friendly contact with the candidate, especially for the first 6 months (remember the statistics!). If theyre a super star candidate and a great fit for your team, then the chances are youll still have a need for them in the future. Call them a few weeks later to check in and arrange to meet them for lunch/coffee/beers for a friendly catch up. Think about it: by keeping in touch with them, guess who theyll be calling first when theyre back in the market within 6months time? Conclusion: Counter offers are here to stay and are becoming more common. However, by educating yourself about the negative reality of counte roffers and following the 5 steps outlined above, you can greatly reduce the risk for a counter offer getting in the way of a successful hire. Do You Have That Spark in Your Eyes - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Do You Have That Spark in Your Eyes - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Itzhak Perlman was recently interviewed by Charlie Rose, who asked Perlman what he looks for when selecting those few special Juilliard School students he wishes to work with. Years before, he himself was a student at Juilliard. “Is it skills or talent?” Rose asked. Perlman’s answer was that talent is not easily defined and that certainly most of Juilliard’s students are very talented to begin with. But Perlman is looking for that spark in their eyes and a special facial expression. So it seems that the differentiator when it comes to selecting students is something beyond skills and talent. That point is also evident in terms of a job interview. Of course interviewers’ questions can be technical ones requiring skill-based answers or they may be behavioral based and looking for attitude, demeanor, and the like. But interpretation of answers is also heavily psychologically basedâ€"meaning, based on what the interviewer sees: Does the candidate have that spark in the eyes when talking about great professional accomplishments? Is there congruity between the spoken words and the body language? A job interview is a stressful test. I don’t think anyone would deny that. The candidate going through this stressful event has to not only focus on the spoken words but also make sure to literally act out the role as interviewee. And there’s more to being an actor than just having acting skills. One has to have the talent and the ability to control and demonstrate genuine enthusiasm. Like an actor’s role, the interviewee’s role can be learned too with the proper guidance. I practice this every day.

This Should Be on Your Resume In 2016 CareerMetis.com

This Should Be on Your Resume In 2016 â€" CareerMetis.com Hiring managers spend all of about six seconds looking at any given resume in today’s job market. Employment rates are rising every day, which means more competition for today’s job seekers. This makes it of the highest importance that your resume stands out from the rest.Today, there’s a higher chance than ever that a computer will reject your resume before a real-life hiring manager even sets eyes on it. That’s how important it is that your resume is concise, tailored, and utilizes keywords. Here’s how to land that interview in 2016:eval1) Make Your Resume “User-FriendlyevalSince hiring managers are bogged down by the sheer number of applicants in their inbox, it makes sense that they go for the easiest reply. By hyperlinking your email in your resume, it makes the decision so much easier for the hiring manager to reply to your application over others. You may also want to include any professional social media pages you utilize, such as LinkedIn, to give your resume that added flair. Hyper link the profiles you mention on your resume.Be careful about adding your full mailing address, as this, may lead to higher chances of identity theft. Never include your street address, and only include your city, state, and zip code.2) Add Some Spice The time of objective statement has phased out. Basically, hiring managers don’t even look at it anymore, so just replace it by making your first header point out your area of expertise. Do a short professional summary about your years of experience, employment history, and major career achievements and just leave it at that. It’s best to structure your resume in a way that appeals to “skimming,” because the Internet has changed the way we read. People do not carefully read text anymore, but instead, dart around in search of the most interesting information. Anything you want to stand out to the hiring manager, you should write in bold lettering.4) The Keywords You Use MatterMidsized companies and larger are r elying more on software to pre-select resumes. If you aren’t including enough of their keywords in your resume, chances are a human will never read it. Pay attention to how the job posting reads. What words seem to be repeating? Those are the words you need to include in your resume before sending it over to the hiring manager. A professional resume writer named Dawn Bugni says that a simple switch from using the words “customer service” to “client relations” might just make or break your resume.eval5) Goodbye, Soft Skills SectionevalAgain, hiring managers don’t have time to read through a long list of skills. Make it more appetizing to the potential employer by integrating your skills into the descriptions of your employment history.Don’t waste space with statements such as “great ability to work on teams”. Nobody believes you and this is something that can’t be verified easily.Attention spans and time constraints are a big problem today, so make your resume wort h reading. Focus on your technical skills especially for positions that require a specific skill set, such as an IT specialist.6) How Long Should My Resume Be?While it’s true that hiring managers don’t have a lot of time, your resume doesn’t necessarily have to be limited to a single page. This is bogus advice that dates back to when the paper was the norm.If you have 30 years’ experience, definitely don’t sell yourself short. Include all relevant information, but remember to keep it both tailored and concise. Each position you held should speak to the position you’re applying for.A recent college graduate should definitely not send over a resume that’s a two or three-page essay. As a recruiter, I never had a problem scrolling the mouse wheel to read the second or 3rd page. As a general guideline two pages will work for most people.
